In 1960, the Walker School in Needham, Massachusetts was created to educate and care for children struggling with acute learning problems, as well as very serious emotional and behavioral challenges. Ten years later, the power of this new idea—an academic and therapeutic milieu—was illustrated in the book The Other 23 Hours, by Walker founder Albert Trieschman, along with Larry Brendtro and James Whittaker.
Fifty years after its creation, multidisciplinary programs at the Walker School, Beacon High School, and Walker Partnerships now extend the specialized therapeutic environment beyond classrooms and into family homes, public schools, and community settings. With Walker’s expertise, dedication, and support, struggling children and families are able to rediscover their strengths, develop new skills, and begin the work of rebuilding their lives.
Whole Days, Whole Lives is a blog for sharing news from the Walker Community. Here you will find information about special education, children’s behavioral and mental health, and updates about child welfare and advocacy.
You will also find the stories of many children, adolescents, and families who face unimaginable challenges. It is our privilege to accompany them on their journey, as they find their strengths, achieve what they may have considered impossible, and build a future for themselves marked by health, accomplishment and pride.
